A mixture of monitoring and modeling is seen as the only way of undertaking environmental auditing as required by national and international conventions and treaties. Methods of measuring and monitoring wind erosion from plot to continental scale are discussed. Two modeling systems that are currently used in Australia for environmental audits are presented. One uses an empirical climate model and dust storm index to report the location of areas that are eroding at higher than climatic conditions would suggest. The other is an integrated climate, wind erosion, and geographical information system that uses process-based models to predict the location and intensity of wind erosion. The limitations and advantages of each model are presented.

Mapping wind erosion hazard in Australia using MODIS-derived ground cover, soil moisture and climate data

This paper describes spatial modeling methods to identify wind erosion hazard (WEH) areas across Australia using the recently available time-series products of satellitederived ground cover, soil moisture and wind speed. We implemented the approach and data sets in a geographic information system to produce WEH maps for Australia at 500 m ground resolution on a monthly basis for the recent thir...

Advanced machine learning methods for wind erosion monitoring in southern Iran

Extended abstract Introduction Wind erosion is one the most important factors of land degradation in the arid and semi-arid areas and it is one the most serious environmental problems in the world. In Fars province, 17 cities are prone to wind erosion and are considered as critical zones of wind erosion. One of the most important factors in soil wind erosion is land use/cover change. T...

Wind erosion risk assessment using time-series ground cover and climate data

This study explores approaches for wind erosion risk assessment utilising available time-series Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and climate products. We present a simple index and a ruleset based approach to identify wind erosion risk areas across Australian using time-series of ground cover, soil moisture and wind speed. These approaches and data sets were implemented in ...

Prediction of the vegetation management impacts on reduction of wind erosion risk in the southern parts of the Varamin Plain, Iran

Wind erosion is a major environmental issue affecting land resources and socio-economic settings in Iran. This paper outlines a study undertaken to provide a new tool to manage wind erosion from physical and economic perspectives. The southern part of the Varamin Plain in south of Tehran is used as a case study. The focus of this study is on exploring the economic and physical impacts of 16 veg...

Wind Turbine Power Curve Modeling Using Parametric Approach

Abstract: In recent years, due to the limitation of fossil fuels and the environmental Impact of using these fuels, focusing on renewable energy sources has increased significantly. In developed countries, using clean energy such as wind power has been considered as an alternative source. Monitoring the performance of wind turbines and controlling their output power quality is one of the import...
